Historic Narrative:
The residences east of Pearl Street on the south side of South Street were built on land owned by the Bearse family (1858-1880). According to the 1910 map, the house was owned by C. Hinckley, probably the Charles Hinckley that leaved near Charles Paine (the neighboring property at 243 South Street) in 1910. Charles Hinckley served as the 2nd assistant lighthouse keeper at Bishop & Clerks Light of Yarmouth from 1881-1883 graduating to principle keeper in 1892-1923, the year the light was first automated.
Hinckley, whose father was a prominent Cape Cod Doctor, had gone to sea at the age of 16 as a cabin boy on an East Indies-bound ship. was a small man, 4’9’’ and reputed to be the world’s smallest light keeper. Hinckley married Dorinda Bearse and had several children. (read the article here)
Until recently, 251 South Street was used as a law office of Haddleton & Associates. It was previously an insurance agency owned by Bob Dowling and then used as a dentist office.
